Baby Loss Awareness.

Today - 15th October - marks Baby Loss Awareness Day, a day to increase awareness and to remember babies who became angels far too soon.

The UK has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world with Scotland being the largest. 1 in 200 babies who are born in Scotland are stillborn despite ranking in the top 33 high income countries in the world. On average, 300 babies are stillborn in Scotland every year which is ten times as many of those who are thought to die through cot death. (A stillborn baby is classified as a baby who is born dead any time after 24 weeks.)

On average, 17 babies are stillborn every day in the UK and some of these could be prevented if health care was better. 1 in every 4 women that get pregnant have to go through the trauma of losing a baby either through stillbirth or miscarriage. It's shocking that there are still so many mothers losing children in this day and age where we have such extensive technology.
In recent days, more songs have been written about these kind of tragic events which will hopefully bring more awareness to the situation and eventually lead to improvements in healthcare which will make these horrific numbers drop. Two of my favourite songs on this matter that spring to mind are Small Bump by Ed Sheeran and Gone by Ebony Day.

I have always been terrified of infertility, having a stillbirth or a miscarriage but this fear was massively increased when I watched one of my best friends live my worst nightmare in January 2012. I will never forget it and to this day, I think about her beautiful baby boy every single day.

Tonight, I lit a candle in loving memory of him and all of the other little lost angels who were taken away from the world before they really lived. Here's hoping that something gets done about these horrible statistics, sooner rather than later.
